“In the end, it’s not about what we accomplish, who we know or how many followers we have.  Our true legacy is how we make others feel and how we impact their journey.   That’s an Artful Life.”

This is part of my first surface pattern collectio This is part of my first surface pattern collection that I created last year and just got loaded on Spoonflower this week. I took a couple of classes from @oksancia last year. Her classes are amazing if you’re wanting to learn repeat pattern design.

So, I haven’t posted in a while because I’ve been struggling with how to present my diversified self without seeming flakey. I have three skillsets that I’m building my business around: painting, illustration and surface pattern design. I love all three equally. Not justifying, but switching it up keeps me excited about what I’m doing.
However, being “diversified” can lead to confusion about what I do. I get that.
Those of you who also have multiple creative baskets, how do you deal with this issue? Does authenticity trump the risk of confusion?

Have a great weekend all!

Playing with color mixing. I’m taking part in Playing with color mixing. I’m taking part in @Susan.Nethercote #paintingasapractice challenge for the month of February. Looking forward to seeing where it leads!
I’m also taking @LauraHornArt #abstractadventuring class right now. I’d like to learn to be looser with my painting which ALWAYS lean toward realism. I love realism, but it gets stressful when I’m trying to get all the details to look just right. I though maybe taking an abstract class might help me to loosen up a bit. What do you think?

Doodle a Day prompt Aromatherapy. I haven't been Doodle a Day prompt Aromatherapy. I haven't been using my essential oils nearly enough lately. This was a good excuse to dig them out! @spoonflower @ellolovey

Day 13 - Process #21daysinmyartworld. I’m still Day 13 - Process #21daysinmyartworld. I’m still developing almost ALL of my processes! Most of the time I’m all over the place. However, one thing that I’ve always done and helps me tremendously, is to go back and forth between digital design work and canvas. I rough sketch, do value studies and color studies in Photoshop (or now Procreate), print them out and use them to paint from.
At various points during painting, I’ll take a snapshot, take it into a digital program and reassess the composition, color, light, etc. I have a background in digital design, so this way of working helps me get past the blank canvas issue, helps me to draw big (I create a grid on the print out and recreate the sketch from that) and saves money on paint and other supplies that I would otherwise be using to do value and color studies.
The drawback is that digital colors don’t translate to paint so I get stuck when trying to match colors. Working digitally denies me the extra experience mixing colors and learning my medium.
The images included here are what’s on my easel right now plus the three print outs I’m working from.
Have a great day!

Turning Point. I had a little glitch in my consis Turning Point. I had a little glitch in my consistency plan these last two weeks!
I FINALLY finished these two characters this week. I consider them a turning point in my creative journey because when I started them (in the fall of 2018) it was the first time I touched paint to canvas in over 10 years. The inspiration for painting them came after a period of depression and frustration with life at the time. It led me to drag my easel and paints out of storage and ultimately changed my outlook and the direction of my life.
There are a LOT of layers of paint on this canvas. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing, didn’t have a good reference photo or even a plan. I would paint, hate it and paint over parts of it again and again until I liked it. Sometimes I wouldn’t touch it for months out of fear of messing it up again! But, the process drew me back in and reminded me how much I LOVE painting and creating.
Even though I didn’t finish these two right away, it sparked a need to create regularly and I’ve since decided to turn my art into a little side hustle. I still feel like such a novice, well, I AM a novice, but I’m trying to take baby steps, be consistent and just enjoy the journey.
